University of Alcalá de Henares
The University of Alcalá de Henares was founded by Cardinal Cisneros in 1499. It was an educational project that reconciled the best models of tradition with more innovative ones.
In its classrooms great figures such as Nebrija, Lope de Vega, Ignacio de Loyola or Quevedo were taught or studied. The prestige of its studies and its teachers served as a model for the universities that were created in America.
Any visit to the university must go through the Paraninfo and the University Chapel in which the tomb of Cisneros stands out.
Birth house of Cervantes
Cervantes' birthplace is a reference centre for the cultural life of Alcalá de Henares. It is located in a building that reconstructs the building where, according to the studies of the historian Luis Astrana Marín, the writer Miguel de Cervantes was born.
The current museum was inaugurated in 1956 as a museum and library of Cervantes.
